The course has the reputation of being one of the oldest and finest heathland golf courses in Great Britain and is currently ranked 53rd in England's Top 100 courses. The course was initially designed by Harry Colt and subsequently enhanced by James Braid. The full eighteen-hole Championship Course of 6,835 yards, contains ninety eight bunkers, and long carries over punishing swathes of heather as well as testing back nine for which the course is renowned.
