Golf Schedule
Enjoyable for golfers of all skill levels, Southport & Ainsdale demands a tactical approach off the tee. Accuracy trumps power as avoiding the gorse that lines each fairway is imperative. S & A played host to the Ryder Cup twice in the 1930s and hole No. 5, ‘Hen Pen,’ surely bamboozled the best golfers of that era. It’s a long par-4. Deep bunkers protect the fairway and a well-positioned drive leaves a semi-blind approach to a green where steep-faced bunkers lurk in wait of errant shots.
Situated next door to Royal Birkdale, Hillside Golf Club is widely regarded as the best links never to have hosted The Open although it has been a final qualifying site for the event on many occasions. The links weaves through sandhills and tranquil pines to deliver a variety of holes certain to test the best players. The course is well known for its wonderful conditioning and slick greens. The back nine holes are considered among the best in Britain.
Founded in 1884, Formby is a magnificent traditional links course of charm and elegance situated close to the shoreline of the Irish Sea. The course lies within the sandhills and pinewoods of Formby. The club has a distinguished record of staging many major Amateur events including the British Amateur Championship on four occasions and the Curtis Cup in 2004. Enjoy the ninth hole, a rugged par 4 where golfers start on an elevated tee that offers panoramic views of Liverpool Bay.
Royal Liverpool, built in 1869, on what was then the racecourse of the Liverpool Hunt Club, Hoylake is one of the oldest English seaside courses and among the toughest and most demanding of the great seaside championship links of Britain. Hoylake, as it is more commonly known, lies at the very heart of the history and development of golf in Britain. It also features the longest Par 5 (#18) on the Open Rota at 616 yards. It most recently held the 151st Open in 2023 which was won by American left-hander Brian Harman.

Arguably the toughest of England's championship links courses. Unusual for a British links it does not sit beside the sea. Its main defense is the vast numbers of deep bunkers guarding both the fairways as well as the greens that present a virtual one-shot penalty. It enjoys a very special atmosphere. It was here in 1926 that Bobby Jones won the Open Championship and his legendary shot to the 17th green is commemorated by a plaque.
A course that provides a formidable test of links golf and fully deserves its recognition as a true venue for The Open since joining the rota in 1954. Each hole runs in valleys between towering sandhills. The problems are clearly stated, if you stray from the fairway the buckthorn and scrub can be demanding. Arnold Palmer won the championship here in 1961 which was a significant step toward attracting top American pros to participate. Tom Watson won the Claret Jug here in 1983. Jordan Spieth won in 2017.
