Started in 1999 by Liz and Phil Biden, The Royal Portfolio is a collection of exclusive hotels, lodges and private residences located in iconic destinations across South Africa. The Royal Portfolio is a family-owned and run business where guests feel a sense of familiarity and comfort. Each hotel is unique and each experience is authentic.

Since first opening Royal Malewane in 2000, the vision of the Biden family has been to give guests a complete experience and a perfect stay.

The opening of The Silo Hotel enabled The Royal Portfolio to offer guests a unique journey across a portfolio of quintessentially South Africa experiences including a Big 5 safari in the Greater Kruger National Park, a gourmet safari in the Cape Winelands, a coastal experience in Hermanus and the natural wonder, art and culture of Cape Town.

By adding golf and private touring, we believe this is one of the most deluxe South African experiences a traveller could hope for.

Your Itinerary

The Silo is an exclusive five-star hotel towering above the V&A Waterfront surrounded by the natural wonder of South Africa’s Mother City. This magical hotel is a celebration of art, style, architecture and design. A tribute to timeless glamour and contemporary luxury offering the highest levels of personalised service synonymous with The Royal Portfolio. The Silo Hotel has been built in the grain elevator portion of the historic grain silo complex occupying six floors above Zeitz MOCAA (Museum of Contemporary Art Africa). Zeitz MOCAA houses Africa’s largest collection of contemporary African art.

The exterior of the building was designed by Thomas Heatherwick, Founder and Principal of the London-based Heatherwick Studio. From the outside, the greatest visible change to the building’s original structure is the addition of the ingenious glass windows inserted into the geometry of the hotel floors. These multi-faceted windows, each housing 56 panels of glass, bulge outward as if gently inflated. By night, this transforms the building into a glowing beacon in the Table Bay harbour.

Each of The Silo Hotel’s 28 rooms, including a spectacular one bedroom penthouse room, has been individually designed and decorated by Liz Biden, owner and founder of The Royal Portfolio. Colourful and eclectic pieces juxtapose the modern, industrial architecture. Liz has always had an eye for the unusual. She has a unique gift for creating beautiful spaces that are at once both stylish and comfortable. Each room has a private balcony and a unique collection of contemporary African art. The views offered by the glittering pillowed-glass windows are some of the best in the world.

The Silo Hotel has over 300 pieces of contemporary African art. The Biden family have carefully curated the collection in collaboration with a number of local art galleries. The Silo Hotel’s Art Concierge offers wonderful tailored art tours that allow guests the opportunity to learn about the incredible African art scene and visit the Zeitz MOCAA below.

<Day 3 ~ Steenberg Golf Club

Play today at Steenberg (tbc). An 18 hole championship course designed by Peter Matkovich; a backdrop of vineyards, gardens, forests and mountains provides the setting for this beautiful exclusive course. The course is always in excellent condition with bent grass greens and lush fairways. Steenberg offers you the opportunity of excellent golf within the historic setting of one of the Cape's oldest wine farms. Dating back to 1682 the vineyards have been replanted and 140 acres are now under vines.

image

<Day 4 ~ Royal Cape Golf Club

Play today at Royal Cape (tbc), the oldest golf club in Africa (1895) which has hosted the South African Open no less than ten times and the SA Amateur Championships eight times. The most recent SA Open held here was in 1996 and was won by Ernie Els. Essentially it is a very flat parkland course, it is always well maintained and a pleasure to play, with lovely views of the surrounding mountains. But don't be deceived by its apparent easiness. The fairways are narrow, demanding extreme accuracy off the tee, wayward shots can be heavily penalized amongst the trees and the greens are well bunkered, especially in the prominent South-Westerly wind, locally referred to as the Cape Doctor.
image

<Day 5 ~ Arabella Golf Club

Today play Arabella (tbc). Ranked no. 5 in South Africa in 2005, Arabella is perfectly designed to exploit is unique position alongside the largest natural lagoon in Southern Africa. The 8th, 9th, 17th and 18th holes run parallel to the lagoon, proving a truly memorable experience. Choosing a signature hole proves to be an extremely difficult task as all of the holes are well designed with spectacular views. The course is the host course to the Nelson Mandela Invitational, Africa's premier Pro-am Charity Event. (cart fee included)

Your Itinerary

Set on a dramatic rocky bluff, this opulent boutique has views over Walker Bay where southern right whales migrate between May and December and calve during the month of August. The property makes the most of the vantage point, with terraces and an infinity pool (one of three) overlooking the water, and huge windows in all 11 suites. The guest units are decorated with eclectic antiques from France, Russia, and China, and have especially wonderful baths—request Studio 5 for a Zen spa-like sunken tub, or Studio 3 for a claw-foot beauty in the center of the bedroom. The slew of nature-based activities range from the sedate (beach lounging, cheese-and-wine-tasting tours) to the exertive (kayaking, bird-watching hikes on the cliffs) to the heart-racing (cage diving among sharks). Refuel at the end of the day in the guests-only restaurant, which serves fresh-caught seafood, stellar sushi, and homemade focaccia.

<Day 7 ~ Pearl Valley Golf Club

Play today at Pearl Valley (tbc). Set in the famous Franschhoek Wine region, this new Jack Nicklaus Signature Course is a treat to play. Pearl Valley is probably in the top conditioned course in South Africa. As with many Nicklaus courses, water on the right with plenty of sand, will keep the golfers mind off the wide landing areas provided. Also a new development, the course and it's geographical location allow for guests to enjoy a day outing in the Winelands with high quality golf to compliment the food and wine. A second course, 'Bears Best' will be built shortly on the same property. (cart fee included)
