Drive for Show and Putt for Dough!!

As Tiger Woods roared back to the summit of the world golf rankings, the above phrase was in the back of my mind. This phrase is often bandied about at my local club but I personally don’t think it is relevant to the regular amateur player.  I think that keeping the ball in play from the tee is more important as it ultimately makes very little difference how many putts you take if you’ve hit 5 or 6 shots before reaching the green.  However, I think the phrase is significant in the professional game where every player has a good long game, excellent short game, and everything else that goes along with being a tour player.  Last week’s tournament at Bay Hill  illustrated this point perfectly; where Tiger finished well down the rankings in almost every department apart from the most important one – putting!

Tiger Woods Returns…Again

Tiger Woods returns to competitive golf this weekend at the Fry’s.com Open in California.  Having not qualified for the Fedex playoffs, it has been 7 weeks since Woods’ last competitive round when he missed the cut at the PGA Championship.

He returns this week having slipped out of the world’s top 50 for the first time since 1996; although he does have renewed hope, as it has been widely reported that he shot 62 last week at his new home course, Medalist in Florida, which included a fantastic back nine of 29.  Whether this form can be carried into tournament play, and eventually into the Presidents Cup, remains to be seen…but at least it’s some positive news about the most famous man in golf…arguably the first we’ve heard about him in 2 years.

Tiger pulls out of the Open Championship

Tiger Woods has pulled out the Open Championship at Royal St George’s as he continues to struggle to recover from the knee injury he sustained at this years US Masters.  The news will come as a big blow to the event, the organisers and fans alike.  In a statement, Woods said: “Unfortunately, I’ve been advised that I should not play in The Open Championship.  As I stated at the AT&T National, I am only going to come back when I’m 100 per cent ready.  I do not want to risk further injury.  That’s different for me, but I’m being smarter this time.  I’m very disappointed, and want to express my regrets to the fans at The Open Championship.”

Tiger’s replacement will be American, Jason Dufner, who will play in his second Open Championship, after making his debut at St. Andrews last year.

Westwood Topples Tiger

After more than 5 years dominating the world rankings, Tiger Woods has at last been toppled from the number one position by England’s Lee Westwood.  There is no question that Tiger’s ‘off course’ issues have affected his decline in form, but it was still no mean feat on Westwood’s behalf as Tiger was so far ahead in the rankings.  I personally think that Westwood’s consistency over the last couple of years, especially in the Majors, has vindicated his position at the top of the rankings and I think that it’s refreshing for the game.

Tiger Woods with the Claret Jug
Tiger Woods with the Claret Jug

It can only be good news for St. Andrews that Tiger Woods has confirmed his entry into this year’s Open Championship.  Tiger will be trying to win the Claret Jug for the third time; the first player ever to do so.  Always a crowd-puller, this year he is sure to add even more interest to the event…and I for one will be watching!
