Old Loans Inn – Re-opening

The newly re-opened Loans Inn offers a retreat in the picturesque village of Loans (located on the outskirts of Troon). After many years of renovating the original building, proprietors Malcolm and Karen Simpson made the decision to close in October 2008 to permit the massive £1.8 million redevelopment to take place.

An authentic 18thCentury Scottish Coaching Inn, the hotel is based in the centre of Ayrshire literally minutes away from Royal Troon Golf Club and a mere 45-minute drive to Turnberry; a fantastic location for the keen golfer and valuable alternative where staying at Turnberry is not an option.

The hotel has maintained the original stone walls and impressive coal-burning fires while styling the building with modern Scottish décor. The new design compliments the traditional country pub whilst showcasing the impressive new restaurant, outdoor terrace/beer garden and 20 uniquely-designed rooms. Each bedroom has been named after an Ayrshire-based golf course (including Prestwick, Turnberry and Dundonald) while the main master-suite was named after Stuart Cink; winner of the 2009 Open Championship at The Ailsa Course at Turnberry.

In addition to the features we’d all expect from a newly renovated 4-star hotel, it also offers a state-of-the-art media centre which allows you to plug in your digital camera and view the day’s golfing shots – or your photos of the Scottish landscape – on your TV. Also, while enjoying a power shower, your MP3 player can be connected into a socket in the bathroom allowing you to enjoy your own musical preferences while winding down after a day on the course.

A terrific accommodation whatever your budget!

Glasgow’s First Five-Star Luxury Hotel

With our UK PerryGolf office being situated a mere 30 minutes from Glasgow City Centre, it is always of interest when a new hotel opens its doors – especially when those doors lead to what is now Glasgow’s first five-star hotel – Blythswood Square.

Peter Taylor (chairman of the privately-owned boutique hotel group in Edinburgh – the Town House Collection – inclusive of Channings and the Bonham) unveiled his latest purchase at the end of October 2009; this was actually a year later than originally planned, a decision based on the climate of the economy at the time. “Glasgow is very well served with hotels, but not at this level,” says Mr. Taylor of the new luxury property – a positive attitude suggesting we are climbing out of recession.

It’s worth mentioning that the building, originally constructed in 1823, was the Georgian headquarters of the Royal Scottish Automobile Club and has been left unoccupied since 2002 (when the RSAC went into administration). It was briefly (and unsuccessfully) developed into individual apartments by the only other owner in-between times. Mr. Taylor has worked with Historic Scotland to ensure that the original features of the grand structure remain in their full glory. Step inside and you will see restorations ranging from the marble flooring throughout to the original chandelier on the main stairway which has been extended with Swarovski crystals to spill down the expanse of three floors!!

The hotel will have 100 bedrooms, a restaurant catering for fine dining, a spa and a conference block called the Monte Carlo suite.

From a golfing point of view, with fantastic links courses such as Western Gailes and eight-time venue of the British Open, Royal Troon all under an hour’s drive from Glasgow, coupled with the bustling city life literally minutes away…it’s a wonder someone didn’t think of it before.

The King’s Course Gleneagles – Great Scottish Golf

Often overlooked in favor of the many great links courses Scotland has to offer, a recent round over the King’s Course at Gleneagles on a crisp fall day was a gentle reminder that not all the best courses in Scotland are to be found by the ocean. The King’s was the first course to open at the hotel in the 1920’s and was laid out by Scotland’s legendary James Braid. There are a few blind shots to handle which make it a standout from modern design but I strongly believe they add to the overall experience. Hiring a caddie is a wise move, with very large greens that have deceptive contours and some lines from the tee offering the chance to “steal a few yards” their local knowledge is well worth the caddie fee. Playing in a 3 ball under competition conditions the round was completed comfortably under 4 hours, the caddies certainly help with pace of play, if only all rounds could be completed in that time the game would be more enjoyable for all. While the PGA Course will host the Ryder Cup in 2014 (it is longer and designed to cope with the world’s best) the King’s provides a unique challenge for all, in truly magnificent surroundings. One more point single figure players should play from the white tees, a greater challenge on the par 3’s and some of the longer 4’s become two good hits to get home.

New Golf – Castle Stuart Golf Club

Historically golf courses in the British Isles take a number of seasons to grow in and the comments we hear from travelers will generally be, “I enjoyed it but a bit raw”. The reality of a short growing season causes everything to take a little longer than many places in the USA to mature. Enter Castle Stuart which is the brainchild of one of the original developers of Kingsbarns near St.Andrews. The reviews since opening in July, 2009 from PerryGolf clients have been universally excellent. Links Magazine have a wonderful article on this great new addition to the Scottish golf scene. My sense is that it will be recognized as one of the great additions to Scottish golf in the months and years ahead. To view the article, click here.
