Plan for Jack Nicklaus course in Aberdeenshire is Back on Track

In 2008, Aberdeenshire Council approved the development of a Jack Nicklaus design championship course, a luxury hotel and 230 houses at Ury Estate in Aberdeenshire, Scotland; however the development was shelved in 2009 when Edinburgh based FM Developments put seven of their subsidiaries into administration, including the department looking after this project.

At the time they claimed they were still firmly committed to the project and intended to follow through with the development, however it is only recently that we’ve seen proof of this commitment as the estate has been sold to a new company FM Ury, which has been established by a former director of FM Developments.  The aim is now to move forward and continue with the developments in the hope they ‘create a memorable golf experience that will hopefully add to the storied golf heritage of Scotland’.  Watch this space for further updates on the project’s progress.

Kingsbarns Golf Links Rated by Golf Digest Magazine

As a firm favourite of the PerryGolf team, we were delighted – but not surprised – to read that Golf Digest Magazine has ranked Kingsbarns Golf Links as 12th on their “Top 50 Links in Great Britain & Ireland”.

Previous accolades include “Best New International Course” in 2000 as awarded by Golf Digest and the ranking of 46th place in Golf Magazine’s World Rankings in 2001.  The course was also listed by Golf World as 13th in the British Isles in 2002.

In the PerryGolf office rankings, Kingsbarns would definitely be found in the Top 10!

Castle Stuart Golf Links Receives Impressive Ranking

Castle Stuart Golf Links, the new home of the 2011 Barclays Scottish Open, is now officially rated as the 56th best Golf Course in the World.  The official rankings by the US based GOLF MAGAZINE were released this week on the ‘front9’ app with Castle Stuart being the highest-ranking debut on the World list. Following on from its success as host venue to the recently played Barclays Scottish Open, Castle Stuart’s reputation continues to spread worldwide.  Perfect location and the courses in the highlands are a must play on a trip to North of Scotland; Royal Dornoch, Castle Stuart and Nairn are some of many worth the trip to the area.

Crail Golfing Society ~ 225th Anniversary

Crail Golfing Society – which is just a short drive from St. Andrews – celebrates its 225th birthday this year.   To think that this Golf Club has been in existence since before the USA’s first ever President was elected is quite an achievement.  There have only been 6 other golf clubs in the world to have reached this milestone, so it’s proving to be a special year for everyone at the club; which is the home of the excellent Balcomie Links and Craighead Links courses.  For anyone coming over to Scotland in search of golf at a club steeped in history, Crail fits the bill perfectly.

Great News for Islay

Further to my post in January regarding The Machrie Hotel & Golf Links entering administration, I was pleased to read that the administrators have found a buyer and the property was sold for an undisclosed sum on Thursday 30 June 2011 to Machrie Golf LLP.

Machrie Golf LLP is a partnership established by Baroness Sue Nye (former Director of Government Relations at 10 Downing Street) and her husband Gavyn Davies (Chairman of Fulcrum Asset Management). The facility will now be managed by G3k, whose CEO is Stewart Smith; a Scottish golf professional for 28 years who has been involved with some very impressive golf course developments.

The Machrie

The Machrie estate is located on Islay on the West coast of Scotland and includes the hotel with bar and restaurant, lodges, golf shop and the 71-par championship golf course. The golf course is considered one of the world’s top links courses and is rated within the UK’s 100 top golf courses.  You can see further details by clicking here.

With an array of single malt distilleries on the island Islay is a great destination for any golfers looking for something a bit different.  It can also work well with a trip to Scotland’s Ayrshire coast as you can fly there from Glasgow and this allows courses like Turnberry, Royal Troon and Prestwick to be included in a trip.
