Planning your next golf vacation to the UK and Ireland? You probably want to know whether you’ll be walking or riding each round of golf. Here’s a chart with the answers to this question at many of the more popular golf courses in the British Isles. New courses to watch in 2013 & beyond
Among my Christmas mail recently was information from two of golf’s leading architects; Tom Doak & David McLay Kidd both of whom outlined some of the projects around the world that they and their teams are presently working on. Two of the projects caught my attention as both are in PerryGolf destinations and will once again add another dynamic to the golf experience in their respective region.
Tom Doak is working on a new course named; Tara-iti Golf Club in Mangawhai, New Zealand. From the image it appears to be built on sandy terrain adjacent to the coastline on the east coast of the North Island as you travel between Auckland and Kauri Cliffs on the Bay of Islands. Given the quality of golf course Doak builds, this should be a great addition to the golf scene in New Zealand as it breaks the 3 hour car journey from Auckland to the Bay of Islands.
David McLay Kidd is awaiting final planning approval for a new links course at Bushmills Dunes on the Northern Ireland coastline not far from Royal Portrush. If and when this course is constructed, it will add yet another terrific links courses in the midst of an extremely vibrant golf area, more than enough courses to keep you busy during a week’s stay.

Irish Open heading to Portrush?
An interesting article raised the possibility of the Irish Open heading to Royal Portrush as soon as 2013 as a first step towards the Open Championship returning at some future time.

Getting to and from Machrihanish is now even easier!
The Kintyre Express, which operates a boat to and from Campbeltown for golfers coming from Turnberry and Troon, has added a second boat to the fleet for the 2011 season which will make it much easier for groups to play both Machrihanish and the newly opened Machrihanish Dunes. The result is that one vessel will now be based in Campbeltown and one in Troon meaning more groups will be able to make the trip across the Mull of Kintyre.
In addition to this, the new boat is an upgraded version, with larger engines, which will make it easier to keep to scheduled crossing times, even in rougher seas. It also means crossings from Ayrshire to Northern Ireland are now much more achievable; so for groups staying at Turnberry, a hop across the water to play Royal Portrush is something that can now be seriously considered.
