St Andrews and The 2013 Open with The Houstonian Golf & CC

PerryGolf’s Keith Baird recently concluded another successful trip – St Andrews and The 2013 Open with The Houstonian Golf & Country Club.  Read more about the trip via Keith’s thoughts below and enjoy the slideshow with pictures from this PerryGolf trip to St Andrews last month.

“Mr. Mack, the head professional at Houstonian Golf & Country Club, brought a group of 45 members to Scotland in July 2013. Their PerryGolf trip was based mostly at the fantastic five star Fairmont St Andrews and included golf on some of the world’s best golf courses including the Old Course at St Andrews, Carnoustie Golf Links, and Kingsbarns Golf Links, plus attendance at the final round of the The Open Championship, won by Phil Mickelson. The trip was a huge success with a return journey in 2015 already being discussed between PerryGolf and The Houstonian. Attached are just a selection of photos from their time in Scotland.”

2013 British Open Golf Voyage ends – Do not miss Next Year’s

PerryGolf’s Founding Director, Colin Dalgleish, has recently returned from the 2013 British Open Golf Voyage.  Below are some of his thoughts July 17 upon embarking on the quest, as well as some of his afterthoughts on July 25.  The golf cruise was to no surprise, another success for both PerryGolf and clients.  Between the five rounds of golf, attending the final round of The Open Championship at Muirfield, cocktail parties and much more fun in the sun, the slideshow below only sheds a mere glimpse into what a luxury golf cruise it really was.  But I bet it’s enough to make you wonder about the 2014 British Open Escorted Tour…Enjoy!

July 17

“As the The Open Championship is shortly about to begin at Muirfield Scotland, the PerryGolf British Open voyage around Ireland and Scotland is now well underway. PerryGolf guests onboard the delightful 700 guest Azamara Quest have already enjoyed a pre-cruise stay at the The Westin Dublin Hotel followed by golf at 2006 Ryder Cup venue the The K Club outside Dublin, the classic links of world top ten Royal County Down Golf Club, and the excellent Carrick overlooking the beautiful Loch Lomond in Scotland. Combined with a great range of sightseeing activities for the non golfing spouses amongst the group, and some outstanding dining, entertainment, and all inclusive drinks onboard, the 100+ PerryGolf guests are having a great time!”

July 25

“PerryGolf’s highly successful 2013 British Open Golf voyage onboard the 700 guest Azamara Quest concluded earlier this week. Since our previous post from the Carrick Loch Lomond, the ship sailed through the western isles and around the north of Scotland before PerryGolf guests had exclusive use of Castle Stuart Golf Links only a few days following the Scottish Open Championship.  She then continued to Scotland’s beautiful capital city of Edinburgh where her central berth afforded guests panoramic views of the city during the two day stay.  After golf at Kingsbarns and attendance at the final days play at The Open Championship (a mere 35 minute transfer from the ship), guests then enjoyed a relaxing day at sea on Monday in perfect weather, the final few miles into the city of Hamburg being accompanied by water cannon spraying tugboat.”

Enjoy the slideshow of pictures taken during the recently concluded 2013 British Open Golf Voyage by PerryGolf.  Watch out for future plans.

The Highlands of Scotland for Golf – Far more than a One Trick Pony

The 2013 Scottish Open at Castle Stuart shall enjoy one enviable footnote; it is the first regular European Tour event to be broadcasted on network television in the USA (on NBC). Doubtless this shall introduce many more golf fans to the wonderfully designed Castle Stuart which was opened in 2009. Castle Stuart is the creation of Mark Parsinen (who created Kingsbarns) and Gil Hanse (of Olympic Golf Course notoriety).

It has added yet another dimension to a region of Scotland that was historically famous for Royal Dornoch, the course where Donald Ross served his apprenticeship as a greens keeper. Ross subsequently emigrated to the USA and built an untold number of courses using the same style he had seen at Dornoch with pushed up greens. Beyond these two fine links courses you will enjoy Nairn (venue for the 1999 Walker Cup Matches) and a myriad of classic, small town links golf that includes Tain, Brora, Nairn Dunbar & Lossiemouth. This is a region of Scotland that is rich and understated, yet thoroughly enjoyable links golf in it’s purest form.

This Google Earth Video Tour below gives some sense of the logistics of the area, with a range of accommodations options including the recently completed Quarryfield House which serves as an ideal base for groups in which to remain in one location and enjoy an exclusive-use facility.

In the last year or two, Trump International, about a 2 hour 15 min drive to the east, has enjoyed much deserved attention. It is a fine, modern style links course and with another course having been announced, it will add yet another arrow in a full quiver of exceptional golf experiences. Aberdeen serves as the host city to the oil & gas industry which works in the deep and challenging waters of the North Sea.  It has also been home for many years to three great links courses: Royal Aberdeen (venue for the 2014 Scottish Open), Cruden Bay & Marcar. Each of these courses is a treat to play and another reason to extend your stay in the Highlands of Scotland.

Quality accommodations and restaurants abound in both Inverness & Aberdeen, which despite their northerly location in the British Isles, have become quite chic and sophisticated for visitors to enjoy.

While all of the “name” golf courses in Scotland that are associated with hosting the Open Championship are in the Lowlands, there are plenty of reasons to find the time to enjoy the Highlands. One visit and glimpse of the scenery and you will clearly understand why each region has it’s respective moniker.
