Northern Portugal – so much more than great golf!

Praia del Rey
Praia del Rey

I was lucky enough to spend some time working in the Lisbon area with one of our PerryGolf groups recently and they really enjoyed the trip.  Lisbon is a fantastic, vibrant city full of character and has a friendly, relaxed atmosphere with some great bars and restaurants.

There is also great golf on your doorstep in the shape of the outstanding Oitavos Dunes and the courses at Penha Longa.  Further north, it is also well worth taking the trip to Praia del Rey which again is a great track.  As a fan of Portugal, since my return I read the below article with interest as this would make for a fantastic addition to any trip in northern Portugal.  When thinking of golf in Portugal, most people focus on the Algarve in the south and, true it has wonderful courses, but can be busy; so if you are looking for a trip combining golf, history, culture, great food and wine, you should look no further.. and I haven’t even touched on the Port!

Ballyliffin to Introduce New Fairway Bunker

Ballyliffin’s Glashedy Links course is to receive an upgrade on the bunkering to the right of the 13th.  The work is scheduled to be undertaken over two winters by the course’s own green staff (under the guidance of one the original architects, Pat Ruddy) and staff are keen to see the work reach completion by March of 2011.  The aim is to fortify the course and improve the experience for golfers of all levels.

Golf Exploding in China

China has approximately 4 million golfers…yet only 400 clubs; but figures are constantly rising, especially now that golf is back as an Olympic Sport, with an unbelievable approximate annual growth rate of 50%.  It’s predicted that by 2020, China will surpass America and have the world’s largest golfing population.

Whilst the links courses of the British Isles are the holy grail and generally top of everyone’s list, combine some of China’s great courses with it’s breathtaking sightseeing and mouth watering cuisine, and it’s fast becoming a ‘must visit’ country for well-travelled golfers.  Whilst it can be difficult and relatively expensive to take a trip as a couple or part of a small group (Chinese law requires that you have guides throughout the trip regardless of the size of your party), if you have a group of friends who travel regularly, and you’re on the lookout for something different (and a bit special) look no further than China.  It will blow you away!

Palazzo Arzaga Hotel Spa & Golf Resort, Italy

Palazzo Arzaga Hotel Spa & Golf Resort in Italy is located in the lovely countryside of Lake Garda and has been nominated in a number of categories for the World Travel Awards.

The hotel boasts an 18 hole, Par 72 Championship Golf Course “Arzaga I”, which was designed by Jack Nicklaus II; while the 9-hole course Arzaga II, was designed by Gary Player.  The courses are designed to fit in around the hilly landscape and I think you’ll find they are great courses for both beginners and professionals.

This year’s Europe World Travel Awards event will be held at the Rixos Premium Belek, located in Antalya, Turkey, on October 1st.  I wish good luck to Palazzo Arzaga Hotel Spa & Golf Resort who were nominated in the following categories:

2010 Europe’s Leading Golf Resort

2010 Italy’s Leading Golf Resort

What’s Your Favourite Golf Movie?

Having just watched Tin Cup for the umpteenth time, it got me to wondering which golf movie is most requested.  Apparently a group of guys passing time over a few beers usually ask for something light-hearted such as Caddyshack, Happy Gilmore or The Water Boy.  The Legend of Bagger Vance goes down well because it features Will Smith.  True fans of the game prefer the biographies of great golfers, such as Stroke of Genius (Bobby Jones) or Follow the Sun (Ben Hogan).  We all enjoyed The Greatest Game Ever Played, which tells the story of Francis Ouimet’s win at Brookline – a bit of a weepy for us girls this one!   Most popular?  Caddyshack or Tin Cup.   Do you agree?
