The West End of Glasgow

Should you find yourself staying in Glasgow’s West End, it would a waste not to take a stroll along the bustling Byres Road.  Staying in the luxury boutique hotel, Hotel du Vin & Bistro (a 15 minutes drive from Glasgow Airport) means you are but a minute’s walk from one of the most eclectic and intriguing streets in Glasgow.

Full of boutiques, pubs, bars and restaurants; there really is something for everyone.  Only just this weekend a friend and I decided to head there to the new Italian-style tapas restaurant, La Vita Spuntini, for lunch.  After several delicious mini-dishes of meatballs, frittatas, one-too-many slices of homemade Italian bread and a fantastic bottle of wine, we wandered up and down the busy street window-shopping at the clothing, home-ware and music stores.

For something a little different, visit Òran Mór for a Play, a Pie and a Pint – a spot of lunchtime theatre with a difference.

As a rule, if you are in the West End of Glasgow, you are ‘morally obligated’ to take a trip along the cobbled back-road of Ashton Lane; a small passageway, only about 170 feet long, but which houses the best bars and pubs in the area.  Naturally, we did not want to ignore this tradition and so resolved to visit another couple of bars before heading home.

Well…it would have been rude not to!

For the Scottish Golf lover

18 Greatest Scottish Golf Holes
18 Greatest Scottish Golf Holes

One of the wonderful side benefits of having a career in golf travel are the many related activities which are of similar enjoyment, generally all of these activities relate to golf!  Golf related publishing is one of them and the aptly named “18 greatest Scottish Golf Holes”   http://18greatestgolf.com/ is the latest addition to review. This book has just been released and is available for sale exclusively through a small collection of some of the premier private clubs in the USA and Scotland. The book itself charts 18 great holes of Scottish golf; from the Old Course at St. Andrews (17th Hole) to far less well known Hopeman Golf Club (12th Hole) in the Highlands, on the non links side it includes Loch Lomond (7th Hole) to the Kings Course at Gleneagles (13th Hole).

One of the most remarkable aspects of the book is the quality and variety of the photography. At every turn the author has striven to capture the essence of the Scottish golf experience with marvelous vistas and “personality” shots which capture the ambiance of the country and those who play golf. Craig Morrison and Andrew Ross who authored this book have a vision to create a series of similar books from other golfing destinations. If they maintain this same quality and creativeness, they shall surely do extremely well. If you are a collector of great golf books then I would respectfully suggest it needs to be added to your portfolio.

If a picture speaks 1,000 words it is difficult to properly capture the depth of this book, my best explanation is that if you enjoy Scotland and Scottish golf, then this book is a must have for your collection as it will doubtless bring back fond memories of golf in the “Home of Golf”.

If you are interested, please drop me an email (gordon.dalgleish@perrygolf.com) and I will gladly help direct you to an outlet for the the book.

Dornoch Town, Scotland

No trip to the Highlands is complete without visiting Dornoch; a small historic town with spectacular architecture and steeped in history.  Most famous recently for Madonna’s wedding and her son’s Christening in late 2000.  It’s easy to see why this was her chosen venue; with Dornoch Cathedral a stunning center piece to the town.

I have visited Dornoch several times and never tire of browsing around the small antique shops not to mention the great walks that the town hosts in the Sutherland Hills.  Part of the town’s magical history involves witchcraft as Dornoch is home to the last execution in Scotland for witchcraft.

The town is ideal for both golfers and non golfers, with Brora Golf Club and Royal Dornoch located close by…it’s the ideal place to spend time during your golf trip.
