In this season of gift-giving, the writers at golf’s leading website offer presents to themselves-and give back to the game they love

I love links golf, have since the moment I ran a shot onto the second green at The Old Course the first time I played the old gal. What fun! And that’s where we spend the ten thousand, going to and playing the great …

Sensible travel tips

I think we have all recognized the challenges and frustrations of air travel are here to stay for an extended period of time, or most likely forever. We have a simply choice, live in a cave and never travel or figure out how best to mitigate the new reality of TSA travel programs. The Machrie Hotel – End of an Era

The Machrie Hotel
The Machrie Hotel

I have read with sadness the news that The Machrie Hotel and Golf Course has entered administration.  I have spend several weekends on Islay over the years and the golf course is outstanding; a real hidden gem and example of a traditional links course shaped by nature.

On a personal note, the hospitality in the hotel was always very warm.  On nearing closing time one night in May I asked the bartender when the bar closed and he simply replied “September”.  As a result several memories are rather hazy shall we say.  The great course, coupled with the many single malt distilleries on the island, made for a great destination, so with any luck they will find a buyer soon.  You can see further details on the story by clicking here.

…and we thought the golf industry was tough!

The recent article from the New York Times regarding golf in Venezuela caught my attention. As clubs in the US and other countries struggle with declining membership, changing socioeconomic conditions for private clubs, etc we at least do not have to concern ourselves with external issues.

I am reminded of receiving a postcard from golf course architect Tom Doak’s office regarding the impending closure of one of his noted, public access designs, Beechwood, just to the north of Baltimore, Maryland. Although the course was only a few years old, the market place had dictated that it be closed and redeveloped for a business park as I recall. Neither result is a great for golfers.
