Cyclone in Cairns not as Destructive as Predicted

I have been watching the news of cyclone Yasi with interest as I recently visited the town of Cairns.  I found it to be a lovely area with a very chilled out atmosphere.  The vicinity has been well prepared for the arrival of Yasi and the emergency services in Queensland have certainly had their work cut out for them over the last few months!

I am glad to hear that the damage predicted over the last few days has not been as bad as expected and thank goodness there has been no loss of life.  Cairns is a great base as it is from here that most people visit the Great Barrier Reef, but it also has some excellent courses nearby such as Mirage Country Club, Sea Temple and (my favourite) Paradise Palms.  I can also recommend a trip on the Kuranda Rail and Skyrail Tour which is very impressive.  You can see full details of the storm by clicking here.

Ashford Castle

Ashford Castle

We often receive requests from clients to experience a stay at a castle when travelling to Ireland and Scotland.  Due to logistics it is not always possible to stay in a castle every night during your golfing vacation, but it is certainly feasible to include a night or two in your itinerary.  In Ireland, Ashford Castle is the ideal location when playing Connemara Golf Club; it has recently has been voted ‘Top Resort in Ireland’ in Condé Nast Traveller’s 2011 Gold List, and one of the top hotels in Ireland in Travel & Leisure’s 2011 World’s Best Awards.

BBC Coach of the Year 2010

Colin Montgomerie was recently honored as the Coach of the Year at the recent BBC Sports Personality Awards. Although he wasn’t technically a coach, he was awarded on the basis of getting the most out of his team.  I don’t think anyone can disagree with this.  Click here for more information.

Romantic Golf Spots for Valentines Day

We thought it may be fun to develop a list of unique spots at a couple of our destinations around the world which are romantic locations with Valentines Day fast approaching…we would love to hear your ideas;

Most romantic hotel for a golfing couple is the Millbrook Resort in spectacular and romantic Queenstown, New Zealand.  A luxury villa suite surrounded by majestic mountains on all sides provides outstanding views. Add to this the sumptuous accommodations and three restaurants to choose from, and many would say there is a no more romantic hotel. Milbrook was recently named the leading Golf Resort in Australasia.

The best 19th hole for a romantic drink is on the balcony at Jack’s Point clubhouse overlooking the beautiful lake bounding the 18th hole. With the Remarkables mountain range alongside, this is a stunning location.

The best hole on which to propose. The par 3 seventh at Jack’s Point.  This hole plays west to a green that appears to sit right on the edge of Lake Wakatipu, even though it is perched 25m above it. Majestic mountains add to the vista.

Getting to and from Machrihanish is now even easier!

The Kintyre Express, which operates a boat to and from Campbeltown for golfers coming from Turnberry and Troon, has added a second boat to the fleet for the 2011 season which will make it much easier for groups to play both Machrihanish and the newly opened Machrihanish Dunes.  The result is that one vessel will now be based in Campbeltown and one in Troon meaning more groups will be able to make the trip across the Mull of Kintyre.

In addition to this, the new boat is an upgraded version, with larger engines, which will make it easier to keep to scheduled crossing times, even in rougher seas.  It also means crossings from Ayrshire to Northern Ireland are now much more achievable; so for groups staying at Turnberry, a hop across the water to play Royal Portrush is something that can now be seriously considered.

Images of the new boat are still to be published so watch this space for further details.
