Since my first visit to Hawke’s Bay 12+ years ago, I was very much taken by the ambience and lifestyle of the region. There is much to like about the area, which will explain why it attracts a healthy number of affluent people from around the world who could call anywhere home.
Hawke’s Bay has historically been the fruit producing capital for New Zealand due to its climate.
To the south of Napier is Mangapapa – a delightful 12 room lodge which rightfully prides itself on superb food and exceptional service. Having recently undergone a multi-million dollar refurbishment, it is an outstanding location from which to enjoy the Hawke’s Bay region. Tom Doak’s masterpiece at Cape Kidnappers is only 20 minutes away, and the art deco city of Napier is similarly a 20 minute drive. A short 5 minute’s drive is the charming village of Havelock North with a particularly attractive ambience.
As I reflected on Mangapapa and how you could adequately describe it, I coined the expression, “the Greywalls of New Zealand.” While it does not enjoy the same proximity to a genuine world class championship course as Greywalls (to Muirfield), it delivers the same comfortable, country elegance and genuinely friendly service for which I like to think Kiwis and Scots are famous.
