Getting to and from Machrihanish is now even easier!

The Kintyre Express, which operates a boat to and from Campbeltown for golfers coming from Turnberry and Troon, has added a second boat to the fleet for the 2011 season which will make it much easier for groups to play both Machrihanish and the newly opened Machrihanish Dunes.  The result is that one vessel will now be based in Campbeltown and one in Troon meaning more groups will be able to make the trip across the Mull of Kintyre.

In addition to this, the new boat is an upgraded version, with larger engines, which will make it easier to keep to scheduled crossing times, even in rougher seas.  It also means crossings from Ayrshire to Northern Ireland are now much more achievable; so for groups staying at Turnberry, a hop across the water to play Royal Portrush is something that can now be seriously considered.

Images of the new boat are still to be published so watch this space for further details.

The Open Returns to Royal St George’s

The British Open returns to Royal St George’s this year.  It will be the 14th time the Championship will be played at what is the southernmost course on the Open rota.  With legends of the game such as Harry Vardon (twice), Walter Hagen (twice), Sandy Lyle and Greg Norman being previous Open winners on the course, every PGA Pro in the world will be dreaming of joining this elite list.

Royal St George's Golf Course

The last time the event was held there, relative unknown Ben Curtis won the trophy, narrowly edging out superstars like Tiger Woods, Vijay Singh, Nick Faldo and Davis Love III; so anyone who qualifies this year will have Curtis’s victory in the back of their mind, knowing anything is possible.

PerryGolf will very soon be promoting an Escorted Tour to attend the Open, which will be combined with some time on the Lancashire Coast, which is home to the 3 other English courses on the Open rota (Birkdale, Lytham and Hoylake) so keep your eyes peeled for what is bound to be a special trip taking in some of the best links golf the world has to offer.

Scottish Restaurant Awards 2010

Ondine Restaurant
Ondine Restaurant

At PerryGolf we are asked regularly by our clients for dining suggestions and this is an area we work hard to keep up to date with.  The relatively new Ondine restaurant in Edinburgh is one that has been doing very well since it opened in September 2009, and it has recently been awarded the title of ‘Seafood Restaurant of the Year’ at the Scottish Restaurant Awards.  This category is one of the most hotly contested given the reputation of Scottish seafood as being amongst the best in the world.

Congratulations also go to the Peat Inn just outside St Andrews who won ‘Restaurant of the Year’.  This is an establishment PerryGolf clients have enjoyed for many years and it seems to going from strength to strength.  Further details of the awards can be viewed here.

Peat Inn, St Andrews Wins Award

Suggestions for good restaurants are always high on a client’s list; as the time for their trip draws closer, we are often asked for our recommendations.

There are certain restaurants that come highly recommended that we do advise are booked in advance to avoid disappointment.  The Peat Inn is certainly one we recommend to book ahead of time; the restaurant is located about 10 minutes from St. Andrews and was recently awarded Restaurant of the Year 2010 at the Scottish Restaurant Award Dinner.  It was a great night for The Peat Inn as the chef-proprietor Geoffrey Smeddle was also named as Chef of the Year 2010.  Other winners that also feature in our PerryGolf dining guide were Ondine Restaurant, Edinburgh for Best Seafood Restaurant and the Best Newcomer Restaurant was received by Rocpool Reserve Hotel, Inverness.

During your trip we suggest booking certain restaurants in advance, perhaps on evenings where it makes sense with your golf/sightseeing schedule, but also to not make reservations for every evening as we find this too restricting when one wishes to relax and enjoy their golfing vacation.
