Hotel Boost for Angus

We at PerryGolf are always very excited at the announcement of new hotels – especially when they will work well for golf destinations – and so we are pleased to hear that the Wyndam Hotel Group are planning a new resort including a championship course designed by Darren Clarke just outside of Dundee.  This will be the first Wyndam Resort in Scotland and should make an already attractive golfing destination a “must play”…especially with the new Trump Course just an hour up the road and Carnoustie Golf Links and St. Andrews on your doorstep!

New Course Planned on Jura

As a big fan of the Machrie course located onScotland’s west coast on the island of Islay, I was pleased to hear about a new golf course planned to open on the neighbouring island of Jura.  Golf on the West Coast and Western Isles of Scotland offers a unique opportunity to play the game as it was done originally.  There are some great courses to choose from too…there is the Machrie as mentioned, but also Askernish on South Uist and Shiskine onArran.  On the Mull of Kintyre peninsula you can also choose from Machrihanish, Machrihanish Dunes and Dunaverty.  Many of these courses are also conveniently located for those looking to do some whiskey distillery touring on a trip and you can visit great places like Lagavulin, Ardbeg, Bowmore, Isle of Arran and Springbank.  This is the ideal option for anyone looking to do a Scotland golf trip that is a little bit different and play some real hidden gems. Seve’s Last Golf Course Design Now Open

Royal Obidos, the last course that Seve Ballesteros worked on prior to his passing last year, has now opened for play.  The resort is located near Obidos, north of Lisbon, and represents an investment of €200 million; comprised of a 65 hectare golf course with holes overlooking Obidos Lagoon and the Atlantic Ocean and a 5 star hotel with spa.  This is a welcome addition to the area that already has great golf in the shape of Oitavos Dunes, Praia D’el Rey and the courses at the Penha Longa Resort.  The city of Lisbon is also well worth a visit; with the crooked streets of the old section to the tree lined avenues, squares and gardens of the modern region.  There are also many interesting buildings to visit such as the Jeronimos Monastery, the Belem Tower, the Castelo de Sao Jorge and the shaded arcades of Palace Square.

New Sponsor for Scottish Open

The Scottish Open will be held at Castle Stuart for at least the next two years after a major sponsor was found for the event.  Global investment management group, Aberdeen Asset Management, have agreed to sponsor the event for three years, with the first two definitely being held at the Highlands links course, with an option to continue for a third year.

The announcement was made at Edinburgh Castle at the weekend and is a major coup for the tournament as it was without a main sponsor until now after Barclays ended their 2013 association with the tournament, leaving serious doubt hanging over this year’s event.

George O’Grady (European Tour Chief Executive) said “We are delighted to welcome Aberdeen Asset Management, an eminent global company based in Scotland, as title sponsor of the Scottish Open, one of the most prestigious tournaments on The European Tour International Schedule which, this year, will once again be played on the spectacular links layout at Castle Stuart.”

Exciting New Northern Irish Links Course Set to Open in 2014

David McLay Kidd, the famous Scottish golf course designer, has been handed the responsibility of designing an exciting new links course in Northern Ireland.  The plans for the Bushmills Dunes Resort and Spa have been in the pipeline since 2001 and now it looks like its taking off; with hope of completion by 2014.

Current Open Champion, Darren Clarke, thinks that the development will be fantastic for the area.  He is well aware of the project and said that the proposed site is ideal for a classic links course – it’s not far from where he lives.

Northern Ireland already boasts world renowned venues such as Royal County Down and Royal Portrush, and when you add Portstewart and Castlerock into the mix, you already have a great destination for golfers. Couple these venues with the new 5 star resort and you have an outstanding option for those who enjoy golf travel.
