Darren Clarke to Design new Scottish Golf Resort Course

I have read with interest this week that a new £55 million golf resort is planned for Scotland.  The new Angus resort will feature a Darren Clarke designed course as well as a 5 star hotel.  It will add to several great courses in the local area; the main one being Carnoustie Links which will be just a few minutes away.  With the golfing Mecca of St. Andrews being under an hour’s drive from the site, this is a welcome addition that makes the region all the more attractive to golfers.  In addition to this, the new Trump course is well under way – and around 90 minutes to the north – the future looks very exciting for golf on Scotland’s East coast.

Great News for Islay

Further to my post in January regarding The Machrie Hotel & Golf Links entering administration, I was pleased to read that the administrators have found a buyer and the property was sold for an undisclosed sum on Thursday 30 June 2011 to Machrie Golf LLP.

Machrie Golf LLP is a partnership established by Baroness Sue Nye (former Director of Government Relations at 10 Downing Street) and her husband Gavyn Davies (Chairman of Fulcrum Asset Management). The facility will now be managed by G3k, whose CEO is Stewart Smith; a Scottish golf professional for 28 years who has been involved with some very impressive golf course developments.

The Machrie

The Machrie estate is located on Islay on the West coast of Scotland and includes the hotel with bar and restaurant, lodges, golf shop and the 71-par championship golf course. The golf course is considered one of the world’s top links courses and is rated within the UK’s 100 top golf courses.  You can see further details by clicking here.

With an array of single malt distilleries on the island Islay is a great destination for any golfers looking for something a bit different.  It can also work well with a trip to Scotland’s Ayrshire coast as you can fly there from Glasgow and this allows courses like Turnberry, Royal Troon and Prestwick to be included in a trip.

Past Scottish Open Champion Pulls Out of this Year’s Event Due to Unfortunate Mishap

The last few weeks have been a rollercoaster for Frenchman, Thomas Levet. Firstly, he was successful in the pressure-packed final qualifying event for the Open Championship at Sunningdale.  He carried on his good run of form by winning his National Open, the Alstom Open de France. But now he has been forced out of the Scottish Open and – more than likely – the Open Championship.  In recent years it has become the norm for French players to be drenched in champagne after a victory.  On Sunday, this tradition continued and Levet’s fellow French pro’s covered him in champagne.  After his champagne shower, Levet decided to jump into the greenside lake at the 18th hole where he subsequently fractured his shin.  For more details, please click here.

Ondine Win Accolade

Ondine is situated in the centre of Edinburgh’s old town and has been endorsed by many of our clients who have stayed in and around Scotland’s capital.  They have just recently been announced as the regional winner for Scotland in The Good Food Guide Restaurant of the Year awards; voted for by diners.

Owner of Ondine, Roy Brett, said of the win: “This is fantastic news…Over the last 20 months we’ve all worked hard to establish Ondine as a great dining destination with a special atmosphere to match,  I’m glad our efforts have been recognised by the critics, by the customers and now by one of Britain’s most prestigious food guides”.

At the restaurant you will find an outstanding selection of quality seafood with the added feature of the crustacean bar where fresh seafood and shellfish are prepared in front of diners.

Make sure you add this restaurant to your list of places to dine next time you travel to Edinburgh.
