New Sponsor for Scottish Open

The Scottish Open will be held at Castle Stuart for at least the next two years after a major sponsor was found for the event.  Global investment management group, Aberdeen Asset Management, have agreed to sponsor the event for three years, with the first two definitely being held at the Highlands links course, with an option to continue for a third year.

The announcement was made at Edinburgh Castle at the weekend and is a major coup for the tournament as it was without a main sponsor until now after Barclays ended their 2013 association with the tournament, leaving serious doubt hanging over this year’s event.

George O’Grady (European Tour Chief Executive) said “We are delighted to welcome Aberdeen Asset Management, an eminent global company based in Scotland, as title sponsor of the Scottish Open, one of the most prestigious tournaments on The European Tour International Schedule which, this year, will once again be played on the spectacular links layout at Castle Stuart.”

Exciting New Northern Irish Links Course Set to Open in 2014

David McLay Kidd, the famous Scottish golf course designer, has been handed the responsibility of designing an exciting new links course in Northern Ireland.  The plans for the Bushmills Dunes Resort and Spa have been in the pipeline since 2001 and now it looks like its taking off; with hope of completion by 2014.

Current Open Champion, Darren Clarke, thinks that the development will be fantastic for the area.  He is well aware of the project and said that the proposed site is ideal for a classic links course – it’s not far from where he lives.

Northern Ireland already boasts world renowned venues such as Royal County Down and Royal Portrush, and when you add Portstewart and Castlerock into the mix, you already have a great destination for golfers. Couple these venues with the new 5 star resort and you have an outstanding option for those who enjoy golf travel.

Kingsbarns Voted Best ‘New’ Course

Kingsbarns Golf Links has been voted the number one ranked new course in Britain and Ireland.  The accolade, which can only go to courses built after 1960, was awarded by prestigious American magazine GolfWeek and was voted for by a panel compiled by the magazine who took a number of aspects into consideration.  Second and third in the rankings also went to Scottish courses in the shape of Castle Stuart and Loch Lomond; so it was a major coup for the home of golf.  It’ll be interesting to see where Trump’s course in Aberdeen will feature on the rankings next time they’re announced.

Anyone who has contacted PerryGolf regarding a trip to Scotland, and has spoken to me, will know that I agree wholeheartedly with this decision, as I consider Kingsbarns to be my favourite links course in the world.  If you haven’t played it and you’re planning a trip to Scotland, be sure to include it on your list of ‘must plays’.
