European Ryder Cup Captain Announced

Congratulations to Paul McGinley on being named as Europe’s Ryder Cup Captain for the matches at Gleneagles in 2014.  As a good Scot, it would have been nice to see Monty return after his success at Celtic Manor, but I am sure McGinley will also do a great job as he goes up against Tom Watson. Further details can be found by clicking here.

Looking forward to seeing Europe defend the title and you can join us as PerryGolf have packages that allow various attendance options; details of which you can see here.

Tom Watson Named 2014 US Ryder Cup Captain

Tom Watson has been named the US Ryder Cup Captain for the 2014 matches at Gleneagles.  Having lost 5 of the last 6 matches, the US PGA has called for the 8 time major winner to turn the tide in a move that could prove to be a masterstroke.  They’ve turned their back on their recent tradition of picking former major winners in their late 40’s preferring someone who is a true legend of the game and who has had success as a Captain before (the last one to do so on foreign soil).  Not only is Tom loved throughout the golfing world (he is extremely popular in Scotland where the matches will be played), but it’ll also be the first time the US leader will be of a greater golfing stature than Tiger Woods.  Sure, Tiger has more majors to his name, but only Jack Nicklaus commands a greater level of respect from golf fans than Tom, so surely he’ll get the best out of the former world number one and we’ll finally see Tiger perform to his best at the Ryder Cup?   After the miracle at Medinah and Europe’s dramatic final day victory, the US will be desperate to win the trophy back and who better than Tom Watson to lead them into battle?

PerryGolf will be offering some fantastic packages to the 2014 Ryder Cup, which will be available to view on our website in the upcoming weeks.  Watch this space for the exact details.

Rosapenna Development

Rosapenna has long been a favourite with PerryGolf clients looking to venture off the beaten track a bit more than usual.  They already have 2 great courses on site – Sandy Hills and the Old Course – but it now looks like they will have the option of another two 18 hole layouts for golfers to choose from having taken over St. Patrick’s Golf Links next door.  This is a further attraction for the North West which already boasts some great courses in Carne, Enniscrone, Co Sligo and Donegal and makes this area ideal for those looking to deviate from the better known courses.  It also offers very good value for money in these difficult times.   Click here to read on.

Muirfield Already Preparing for the 2013 Open

muirfieldI recently had the pleasure of taking a day out of the office to play at Muirfield with a group of clients.  We played a regular fourball in the morning followed by foursomes (alternate shot) in the afternoon, with a fantastic lunch in between where fillet of beef with all the trimmings was the order of the day.  The weather was so good that I came away with a touch of sunburn.  The course was in immaculate condition and the caddies mentioned that the course is already being grown in preparation for next year’s Open Championship.  Ernie Els won the Open the last time it was played at Muirfield in 2002.

The History of the Ryder Cup

As we quickly approach the 2012 Ryder Cup Matches and excitement mounts on both sides of the Atlantic, I saw a great series of video’s which chronicle the history of the Ryder Cup. It seems hard to fathom that during the 1970’s there was every chance that the Ryder Cup would disappear or at the very least become a footnote in golf history as the Americans continued their domination of the Great Britain & Ireland team.

Part 1 can be viewed here.

If you take the time to look through the videos which are posted, you may notice the comments that Arnold (as Team Captain) made at the expense of Jack Nicklaus in Part 3 .

The late Seve Ballesteros appears in Part 4 in his usual positive perspective. Hard to believe that the PGA of American had to pay a network to broadcast the 1989 Matches!

If you have the time and appreciate the Ryder Cup Matches for what they are, this is a great history lesson to better understand how we got to where we are.
