St. Andrews International Underway

It’s not like the Home of Golf needs another course but the more the merrier!  I read with great interest this week that work has officially started on the new St. Andrews International project located just outside the town.  With a planned opening date of spring 2015, there is a lot of work to be done, but let hope this provides yet another world class course to the area.  Further details of the story can be found here, with project details at the following link – http://www.standrewsigc.com/ .

Win a trip to the 2014 British Open at Royal Liverpool from Glenmorangie

Glenmorangie is known for their well made single malt whiskeys – but is now searching for the world’s most “Unnecessarily Well Made” golf courses.  Every golfer has a favorite golf course – maybe it’s because you had a great round there or watched a Major there or just really enjoy the layout of the course.  They want to find out which course that may be, and to help do so have brought four established professionals on board to help as ambassadors.

Drive for Show and Putt for Dough!!

As Tiger Woods roared back to the summit of the world golf rankings, the above phrase was in the back of my mind. This phrase is often bandied about at my local club but I personally don’t think it is relevant to the regular amateur player.  I think that keeping the ball in play from the tee is more important as it ultimately makes very little difference how many putts you take if you’ve hit 5 or 6 shots before reaching the green.  However, I think the phrase is significant in the professional game where every player has a good long game, excellent short game, and everything else that goes along with being a tour player.  Last week’s tournament at Bay Hill  illustrated this point perfectly; where Tiger finished well down the rankings in almost every department apart from the most important one – putting!

Western Gailes Clubhouse Development

The clubhouse at Western Gailes Golf Club is in the process of receiving a major facelift.  The new development will introduce a new club shop, bag drop area and upgraded course entrance and exit.  Furthermore the club plan to offer a gallery which will put on display articles relating to the Club’s history.  The anticipated date of completion for these renovations is May of this year.  It’s also worth noting that the lunch and snack menus will be re-vamped in April by the club’s new catering team.

More details of the changes at Western Gailes can be read on their new website here.

First sight of Old Course changes

With debates taking place on many topics within the world of golf, the planned modifications to the Old Course of St Andrews announced late November last year, and covered in our blog post of that time , caused considerable controversy and divided opinion.

In announcing the changes the St Andrews Links Trust and the R&A said they were being made “to stiffen its defences in some places to ensure it remains as challenging as ever to the professionals. The proposals from (highly respected links architect) Martin Hawtree should place more of a premium on accuracy and ball control while retaining the spirit and character of the Old Course.”  In underscoring the minor nature of the work R&A Chief Executive Peter Dawson said “It’s men with shovels and wheelbarrows rather than bulldozers.”

The first phase (winter 2012/13) is now complete.  The changes appear minor, blend in well, and are consistent with the Links Trust’s measured and caring yet progressive custodianship of the St Andrews Links.  The images below reaffirm that the affected areas will be fully ready and in play for the 2013 season.

Links Trust Description; On the 2nd hole, the two bunkers right and short of the green will be moved closer to the right edge of the green. The ground to the right of the green will also be recontoured to create more undulations and the width of 3rd tee will be reduced to accommodate this. Two bunkers on the right side of the fairway, near the 3rd Championship tee, will be removed.
