Cyclone in Cairns not as Destructive as Predicted

I have been watching the news of cyclone Yasi with interest as I recently visited the town of Cairns.  I found it to be a lovely area with a very chilled out atmosphere.  The vicinity has been well prepared for the arrival of Yasi and the emergency services in Queensland have certainly had their work cut out for them over the last few months!

I am glad to hear that the damage predicted over the last few days has not been as bad as expected and thank goodness there has been no loss of life.  Cairns is a great base as it is from here that most people visit the Great Barrier Reef, but it also has some excellent courses nearby such as Mirage Country Club, Sea Temple and (my favourite) Paradise Palms.  I can also recommend a trip on the Kuranda Rail and Skyrail Tour which is very impressive.  You can see full details of the storm by clicking here.

Portugal – undiscovered gem

Having traveled to Portugal since 1973 I have long been a admirer of the country, not only it’s climate, but people and quality of lifestyle. Jim Frank provides a more in-depth perspective of this terrific golf destination.

Overshadowed by its next-door neighbor Spain, as well as the rest of Europe, Portugal deserves more attention

Pity poor Portugal. Like a third-string quarterback, it rarely gets the good look, seldom a chance to strut its stuff. In European golf, Great Britain is the franchise player, Spain the backup. Lowly Portugal rides the bench, saying, “Play me or trade me.”

My advice? Play.

It’s not as if anyone …

Speyside Golf Whisky Trail Marks Convergence of World’s Greatest Inventions

In October, my friend David Whyte– the renowned Scottish golf journalist– picked me up in Glasgow for a quick tour of the Speyside Golf Whisky Trail in central Scotland.  Over five days we visited some of the best little-known golf courses in that golf-rich nation (Moray, Forres, etc), toured several whisky distilleries including Benromach (the smallest working distillery in Speyside) and The Glenlivet (with roots …

New Zealand Open?

It seems the currently homeless New Zealand Open has still not found a definite residence for 2011.  The event has been staged at the fantastic Hills course just outside Queenstown since 2007, but looks unlikely to be held there again in 2011.  Recently the favourite to hold the event has been Clearwater in Christchurch which is also a great course but not in such a beautiful setting.  We will await the final decision with interest and hope the event will actually go ahead.

Queenstown and Christchurch are both located on New Zealand’s South Island and offer some great courses in addition to the Open venues.  In Queenstown there is Jack’s Point Queenstown Golf Club (Kelvin Heights) and Millbrook; while in Christchurch there is Christchurch Golf Club (Shirley) and also getting into the foothills of the Southern Alps; Terrace Downs.  Either choice makes a great destination for a golf trip or the two can be combined with the inclusion a short flight.

New Zealand Super Lodges

Huka Lodge, New Zealand

I have previously blogged on how great Huka Lodge is, so I was delighted to see this great article on the Conde Nast Travel website – click here to view.  Under recommended hotel and “Super Lodges” I can confirm that both Huka Lodge & Cape Kidnappers are indeed super lodges and a definite must visit while in New Zealand; the service and accommodation are second to none!  The pictures just confirm how great these properties are…the best way to spend time and relax during your golf vacation.
