Isle of Skye

Visitors to Scotland generally have a ‘must see’ list which includes Edinburgh, Loch Lomond, Loch Ness and the Isle of Skye.  The latter, although slightly less accessible, draws a significant number of couples blending a golfing holiday with a once in a lifetime trip.  For many it will be a trip ‘home’ tracing their roots.  It’s important to remember that Skye was as much affected by famine and the clearances as the Highlands.  The clans of MacLeod and MacDonald were the main players, but Clan Mackinnon also had settlements there.  Few children grew up without hearing the romantic story of Flora MacDonald helping Bonnie Prince Charlie to escape by rowing boat and this brave young lady is buried in Skye.

The scenery, the striking Cuillin Hills and the food gathered from the fertile agricultural areas and intricate coastline make Skye an island well worth visiting as suggested in Dan Saltzstein’s excellent article in the New York Times recently.  Click here to read on.

Cooking School, Italy

If you are travelling to Italy, the one activity that we find both golfers and non-golfers alike love, is an authentic Italian cooking class.  An ideal location to experience this is in the Lake Como area where cooking classes take place in the Culinary Institute, “Gianni Brera” – which is considered one of the best institutes in Italy.  Lessons are hands-on and before beginning the cooking process, the participants will be taken to the nearby food department store where the chef will introduce you to the culinary habits of the Italians.

The classes are based on the preparation of the lunch or dinner that will then be eaten by the participants themselves at the end of the class.  Importantly, the meal is accompanied by fine wines!

PerryGolf can incorporate as many cooking classes as desired into a vacation and would be delighted to arrange transfers from your hotel (ideal in order to allow you to enjoy the wines on offer during the day).

A perfect addition to your Italy vacation.

Staying in Cape Town

Cape Town is an interesting and vibrant city; with Table Mountain framing the city and white beaches surrounding it, it really is unique.

I’d definitely recommend a wine tour during your stay which would mean journeying to the Boland Mountains and Cape Wine Country.  With such great wines on offer in South Africa, it would be a definite shame not to experience a tour during your stay.

Steenberg Hotel is accommodation PerryGolf recommend during your stay in Cape Town as it offers a challenging 18-hole golf course and award winning spa.  The hotel is located in the Constantia wine region found just outside the city.  It is quite a small hotel, with only 21 rooms and 3 Suites which are located within the authentic Manor House (which dates back to 1682).  During your stay you are really made to feel welcome…it is a very relaxing experience and definitely first class.

Golf Exploding in China

China has approximately 4 million golfers…yet only 400 clubs; but figures are constantly rising, especially now that golf is back as an Olympic Sport, with an unbelievable approximate annual growth rate of 50%.  It’s predicted that by 2020, China will surpass America and have the world’s largest golfing population.

Whilst the links courses of the British Isles are the holy grail and generally top of everyone’s list, combine some of China’s great courses with it’s breathtaking sightseeing and mouth watering cuisine, and it’s fast becoming a ‘must visit’ country for well-travelled golfers.  Whilst it can be difficult and relatively expensive to take a trip as a couple or part of a small group (Chinese law requires that you have guides throughout the trip regardless of the size of your party), if you have a group of friends who travel regularly, and you’re on the lookout for something different (and a bit special) look no further than China.  It will blow you away!
