Wentworth – Changes to the Final Green

Wentworth's 18th Green
Wentworth's 18th Green

Like all courses that host major events, the 18th green at Wentworth has been often televised and is familiar to golfing fans all over the world.  Not any more!  Not only are the strategically placed bunkers still there, but a water feature has added to the drama of the final hole.  Owner, Richard Caring, impressed by such an element on most other major courses, decided that this was lacking at Wentworth.  Although his course manager, Chris Kennedy, and the course architect, Ernie Els, were dubious that it was a good idea for this particular course, they gave it a go.  The result is a man-made ‘burn’ running through a group of pot bunkers in front of the green and resulting in a far more testing finish.   This is just the most striking of a number of changes to the course, especially the last five holes, and any golfer who thinks he knows his way around will have to think again!

British Golf Museum – St Andrews

With a few hours to spare on a rather damp afternoon, we decided to visit the British Golf Museum; just across the road from the first tee on the Old Course in St. Andrews.

The British Golf Museum
The British Golf Museum

Deceptively small from the outside, it took us on a fascinating journey through the history of the game, introduced us to some of its stars and celebrities and made us realise how far the equipment has progressed.  There are many light-hearted inclusions, far removed from the formality, rules and rituals I associate with the home of the Royal & Ancient Golf Club.  With my love of crosswords, I found the Dictionary Corner irresistible…and there will be a few words from there cropping up in my Scrabble games in future!

2010 marks the 20th anniversary of the British Golf Museum and the 150th anniversary of The Open Championship and so the museum has included some dedicated special displays– so there is no better year to visit!

New Melbourne, Australia Hotels

Melbourne is already spoilt in terms of golf courses being located a short drive from the “Sandbelt”; which maintains names such as Royal Melbourne and Kingston Heath, but it is now adding to its hotel options with a range of new properties that have either opened this year or that are due to open later on in the year.  It promises to keep this vibrant cosmopolitan city high on the “must-see” list of any traveller, not just golfers.  You can see more details of some of the new hotels by clicking here.  We will be especially interested to see what Gordon Ramsey creates at the new Crown Metropol.

New Restaurants at Rusacks, St Andrews

Rocca
Rocca

Dining in St. Andrews offers several excellent places to eat; MacDonald Rusacks Hotel (located right next to the 18th hole of the Old Course) is now certainly one of them.  The hotel has opened two new restaurants on site; restaurateur Adrian Pieraccini has joined in partnership with Macdonald Hotels to create the new restaurant Rocca (which opened in February 2010) and has panoramic views over the 18th hole.  Rocca is an Italian classic style grill restaurant with an excellent a la carte menu – they pride themselves on using the best Scottish and local produce.  The young energetic kitchen team is led by head chef Liam McKenna – who 3 years ago won the distinction award of The Martin Wishart Scottish chef scholarship.

The One Under
The One Under

The second restaurant is The One Under and is St. Andrew’s one and only gastro pub.  This was also developed by Adrian Pieraccini and was introduced in December 2009.  Accurate to the meaning of ‘gastro pub’, the main focus here is on the quality of the food.

This is the perfect place to relax after a long day on the golf course so I would say that during your stay in St Andrews a visit to either of these restaurants is highly recommended!

World Cup of Golf Finds a New Home in China

The World Cup of Golf has been moved from the Mission Hills Resort in Shenzhen, to a new home in Southern China.  From 2011, it’s going to be held at the fantastic new Mission Hills resort in Hainan Island, which boasts a remarkable 22 courses.   The event, will take place biennially – on the Blackstone Course -meaning it won’t clash with golf at the Olympics, which makes its long awaited return in 2016 when the Games are held in Rio De Janeiro.

The switching of the venue to Hainan Island is set to enhance Mission Hills’s plan for global domination, as it wouldn’t surprise me to see one of the World Golf Championships – the WGC-HSBC Champions – moved from Shanghai to Shenzhen in the next few years.   Watch this space…
