Souter Johnnie’s tragically Burns Down

One of PerryGolf’s favorite restaurants in Ayrshire, Souter Johnnie’s, sadly burned down on Tuesday night.  It is thought that the thatched roof caught fire from flaming embers from one of its chimneys.  The popular restaurant is located on the site of the Robert Burns School House and had recently gone through an extensive refurbishment.  Everyone at PerryGolf hopes to see it fully restored to all of its glory as soon as possible.

Seve’s Last Golf Course Design Now Open

Royal Obidos, the last course that Seve Ballesteros worked on prior to his passing last year, has now opened for play.  The resort is located near Obidos, north of Lisbon, and represents an investment of €200 million; comprised of a 65 hectare golf course with holes overlooking Obidos Lagoon and the Atlantic Ocean and a 5 star hotel with spa.  This is a welcome addition to the area that already has great golf in the shape of Oitavos Dunes, Praia D’el Rey and the courses at the Penha Longa Resort.  The city of Lisbon is also well worth a visit; with the crooked streets of the old section to the tree lined avenues, squares and gardens of the modern region.  There are also many interesting buildings to visit such as the Jeronimos Monastery, the Belem Tower, the Castelo de Sao Jorge and the shaded arcades of Palace Square.

Kintyre Course at Turnberry, Scotland

Gary at the 6th Tee on The Kintyre

It goes without saying that the Ailsa Course at Turnberry is a class above its sister course the Kintyre.  It’s ranked as one of the best in the world, it’s on the current Open Championship Rota, and it’s been the scene of some of the most memorable finishes to Open Championships in years gone by.

However, having played the Kintyre Course recently, I’d strongly recommend it for the traveller seeking extra golf wherever possible.  Along the Ayrshire Coast, you have the Ailsa, Royal Troon, Prestwick, Western and Glasgow Gailes, and not far behind on the list, I’d put the Kintyre.  For those staying at Turnberry, the Kintyre Course is an ideal addition to your schedule.  The course is onsite, riding carts are available, and it’s a strong course in its own right.

New Restaurant Opens in St. Andrews

Recently opened in St. Andrews on South Street is The Adamson restaurant; a great new addition to the already excellent dining options in St. Andrews.

The Adamson offers brasserie style dining and serves Scottish food with a contemporary twist.  I look forward to dining here and will review further once I have had the opportunity to sample the food and service!

Western Gailes Golf Club

I had the pleasure of playing Western Gailes last week, and whilst March is normally not the best time of year to be golfing in Scotland, the sun was splitting the sky and the course was in fantastic condition; so it was an excellent day out of the office!  Not only was the full course open (not many courses can boast that at this time of year) but the greens were in great shape, and at the standard you’d normally expect in late spring.  My golf was even up to scratch with four birdies thrown into the mix.

If you’ve never played Western Gailes and you’re considering a trip to Scotland, be sure to add it to the wish list because, in my opinion, it’s as good as it’s more famous neighbours, Royal Troon and Prestwick.
