The recent article from the New York Times regarding golf in Venezuela caught my attention. As clubs in the US and other countries struggle with declining membership, changing socioeconomic conditions for private clubs, etc we at least do not have to concern ourselves with external issues.
I am reminded of receiving a postcard from golf course architect Tom Doak’s office regarding the impending closure of one of his noted, public access designs, Beechwood, just to the north of Baltimore, Maryland. Although the course was only a few years old, the market place had dictated that it be closed and redeveloped for a business park as I recall. Neither result is a great for golfers.
