Year To Go: 2014 Ryder Cup in Scotland

Last week marked a #YearToGo until the 2014 Ryder Cup in Scotland. To begin the one year to go celebrations, European Ryder Cup Team Captain, Paul McGinley, and American Ryder Cup Team Captain, Tom Watson, made their way on board the “Ryder Cup Express” from Edinburgh to Gleneagles to meet face to face.
 

The Ryder Cup is held from September 23-28, with matches played September 26-28 at the PGA Centenary Course at Gleneagles Hotel.

There are many reasons as to why the Ryder Cup is one of the greatest sporting events of all time, and there’s no question that the 2014 Ryder Cup will reflect this more than ever. For starters, Europe has won four of the last five Ryder Cup matches, most recently the 2012 Ryder Cup at the Medinah Country Club in Illinois. 

Known to by many as the Miracle of Medinah, Europe managed to overcome a four point deficit going into the final day of play and win 14 ½ to 13 ½ over the U.S.   While the comeback win distraught Team USA, Watson aims to redeem themselves telling Sky Sports News, There’s only one thought – to win. Watson knows his team will need to prove themselves in September, but he is hopeful to repeat his efforts as Captain at the 1993 Ryder Cup, the last time a US Captain has won on European soil.

 

This is also the first time Scotland has hosted the Ryder Cup since 1973. Certainly difficult to believe knowing that the “Home of Golf” has staged the Open Championship ninety-three times: St Andrews – 28, Prestwick – 24, Muirfield – 16, Royal Troon – 8, Carnoustie – 7, Musselburgh – 6, & Turnberry – 4.  

Not only is the 2014 Ryder Cup its first return to Scotland since 1973, it’s actually just the second time to ever be hosted in Scotland – the 1st time was played host by Muirfield, venue of the 2013 Open Championship.
