The Machrie takes its name from the Gaelic word machair, which means the links. Set in the dunes of Islay, and designed in 1891 by Willie Campbell, it is the traditional Scottish links.
Islay, pronounced eye-la, is an island off the Scottish mainland known as the Queen of the Hebrides. It has 130 miles of coastline. When Willie stood on one of the sand dunes overlooking Laggan Bay in 1891 he said, “this place was made for Gowf”. Well, he was right, and the Helensburgh office of PerryGolf employees would indeed agree it’s a great one of their favorites.

‘The Machrie’ is on the famous whisky island of Islay, which is home to eight distilleries, formerly nine until Port Ellen Distillery went out of production in the ’80’s. Port Ellen now houses a malting which continues to supply all Islay distilleries, as per an agreement signed in 1987. Stocks of Port Ellen whisky are now owned by Diageo – the world’s largest producer of spirits; due to the closing of the distillery, its whisky is becoming more and more collectable.
