Sydney, Melbourne’s Sandbelt & Tasmania ~ The Best of Australia 2014 by PerryGolf (Escorted)

My wife Sharron and I recently had the distinct pleasure of participating in PerryGolf’s 2014 Best of Australia Escorted tour. There were 13 people on the tour plus our escort Noel, who was from Auckland. It didn’t take long for everyone to start enjoying each others’ company and relationships just kept getting better as the trip went on.

We started in Sydney with a tour of the city and the Opera House followed by a bay cruise then dinner at a wonderful waterfront restaurant. Sydney is a very cosmopolitan city that has everything to offer.

The next day we were off to play New South Wales Golf Club, an Alister MacKenzie gem. We had and amazing day complimented by perfect weather.

After Sydney we flew to the island of Tasmania to stay at the Barnbougle Golf Resort. This was quite a contrast from being in the city as the resort is in a remote location in the country surrounded by beautiful scenery of the coast line. I liken it to Bandon Dunes for those of you that may have been there but with much better weather. It has two golf courses, a wonderful lodge and spa, and excellent restaurant.

We met a group of Australians on holiday during our visit and challenged them to a long driving contest the next day. It was too close to call so we declared a tie and had drinks to celebrate our fun together.

Next we flew to Melbourne for the last leg of our trip. Melbourne is another amazing city with excellent restaurants, hotels, shopping and beautiful gardens.

While there we took a private tour of the wine country north of the city and had a glorious day.

The highlight of our stay was playing Royal Melbourne GC, another Alister MacKenzie design, and it was everything we had hoped for…a very challenging course, with huge fast greens and daunting bunkers. This club has an aura history and tradition making it a wonderful golf experience.

Our last night together was celebrated with a farewell dinner that lasted late into the evening where we shared stories and laughs of our time together before saying our goodbyes. Some of the group headed off to New Zealand for some more golf and sightseeing while my wife and I stayed in Australia for another week to experience more of the Victoria region.

This is a trip we’ll remember fondly for the rest of our lives as we look forward to seeing some of the new friends we made on another golf course somewhere down the line.

Aussie Aussie Aussie, Oi Oi Oi is a cheer or chant commonly performed at sporting events in Austrlia, similar to that heard in Britain, Ireland and some Commonwealth nations: Oggy Oggy Oggy, Oi Oi Oi.
